From Breakdown to Brain Reboot: How Neurofeedback Gave Me My Life Back

My name is Renee Willson, and I’m the founder of NeurPhoria Neurofeedback.

That’s “Neur” — for brain. And “Phoria” — as in a very nice place to be.
Because that’s the goal: helping your brain become a better place to live.

Before I launched NeurPhoria, I lived through what can only be described as a full nervous system breakdown.

I began working for Alberta’s Children’s Emergency Department. I then moved to the great white north for a change of scenery.

I spent 7.5 years in the Arctic, working in emergency response.
Shift work disrupted my circadian Rhythm.
I suffered three deeply personal losses in quick succession, hitting one after the other. Sprinkled with a couple big trauma situations.


Add the Arctic’s extremes—20 hours of darkness, 20 hours of daylight, and punishing extreme temperatures...


Minus 63 is a cold that doesn’t just sting — it
inhabits you!

The slow drip of chronic stress and trauma was like an invisible drip – subtle at first, but steady and corrosive.


Until one day, I simply shut down.

I was medically exhausted. Traumatized. Anxious. Depressed. Malnourished. My Adrenals failed.
I was unable to sleep.

My body was so tense I couldn’t stretch my arms out. My arms actually curled in. I couldn’t open my jaw. I thought I was having heart attacks but they were panic attacks apparently.

Basically, my system had locked into survival mode - and it was terrifying.

I tried everything: all kinds of therapy, yoga, even giving up on my dream... my home, moving back to Ontario where I was born and raised.

But nothing worked.

I was staring down a life sentence — medicated and never fully recovering.

Desperate, I picked up the book, the Body Keeps the Score by Bessel van der Kolk— And there it was: a chapter on neurofeedback.

Something inside me lit up.


I found a practitioner a few counties over.
And with nothing left to lose, I dove in – hard.


I committed to daily sessions for 3 months while off work.

And it worked.

My brain recalibrated.
My nervous system stabilized.
And I got the keys back to my emotions.

I started sleeping again. Laughing again.
Living again. Wanting to get up and take care of myself. I could look myself in the mirror again. My body relaxed.

It was like a cheat code for my life’s computer.
that actually worked.

That transformation is what drives me. I’ve lived it.
Now I’m on a mission to help others find the same peace —
with what I lovingly call a
“bougie” mental health experience.

EEG Sensors go on your scalp.
They don’t “do” anything to your brain—they simply listen.

We dim the lights, it smells good in there, Lemon grass or other subtle relaxing scent.  

Your brainwaves are monitored 256 times per second.


When the system detects dysregulation—like anxious over-arousal or depressive under-arousal—
it sends subtle feedback to your brain in the form a skip in music, a flicker on computer screen.

Basically, the technology reflects back what your brain is doing in the moment.

I want to side step here. I wasn’t blessed with the ability to have children. And I have so much respect for parents, so this is always a soft spot for me.

We need anxiety — it’s what gets us out of burning buildings.
We just don’t need it screaming during breakfast and all day long when you’re in a meeting, at the grocery store, when you are trying to sleep or all of the above!

reclaiming your response to them.

And yes, it takes a commitment. Like going to the gym for your brain. It builds on itself but consistency is key.

You have to show up. Two, maybe three times a week.
For a few weeks. Sometimes a few months. At a fraction of the cost of talk therapy.
But here’s the question:
